Garland delegation visits the Taiwanese Legislation Yuan (09/30/09)

Garland delegation visits the Taiwan Legislation Yuan

While on their visit to Taiwan, Mayor Ronald Jones and the Garland delegation visited the Legislation Yuan.

The Legislative Yuan; literally Law-establishing court, is the legislature of the Republic of China which administers Taiwan, Penghu, Inmen and Matsu Islands. The Legislative Yuan is one of the five branches of government stipulated by the Constitution of the Republic of China. Although it is sometime referred to as a parliament, the Legislative Yuan is a branch of government. However; it has become common in Taiwanese newspapers to refer to the Legislative Yuan as the Parliament.

This parliament could be compared to the US Senate and House of Representatives. The Garland delegation met with the LuChu representative to the Yuan during a brief break in the session.

The sessions of the Yuan are actually much like a court proceeding in the US, with members of the Yuan asking questions of each side of a controversy or issue. While the media most often times shows the controversial end of the proceedings, there were several items discussed during our stay, that lead to nothing more than a little heated discussion.

Mayor Ronald Jones said, “Our hope is that the visit of the Garland delegation will enhance a better understanding of Taiwan’s legislative process, while fostering a closer relationship between the governments of Garland and LuChu, and indeed all of Taiwan.”

Establishing relationships and making friends with the people and businesses of Taiwan are the first steps towards the globalization of Garland. This visit will surely prove to be a step in that direction.

The slide show will show the delegations visit to the Legislative Yuan as well as a pictoral review of the countryside between the host hotel and the Legislative building.
